Sense
I sense a false love that’s stirring this hour
Sinister sin is grabbing at power
It lays down its roots in the dung of distrust
And sprouts as a weed to awaken my lusts
The plant is a beauty when I shoot it a glance
I give it two looks, then give it a chance
The smell is unreal, the aroma’s divine
It reeks with the scent of the sweetest of wines
Next comes the sight, and lo, what a view!
For in but a moment the plant quickly grew
Now it’s a shrub with beautiful fruit
And now it’s a tree with great branches to boot
And here comes the sound, or the lack thereof
For before glance two I could still hear the Dove
But the longer I stare, the louder the silence
Deep quiet supplanting all holy violence
Some hand plucks the fruit, mine if I’d guess
It weighs but a gram, or possibly less
The feel of the skin on my palm is quite nice
Recalling fond memories of indulging the vice
With high thrills my thoughts remember the flavor
Temptation crescendos, this fruit I must savor
Surrender wins out and I bite on the crop
Then out of my mouth the produce doth drop
The plant had sworn joy with two fingers crossed
Found me a pleasure that hadn’t been lost
Cast out a hook with dangling bait
Sold me what’s mine, if only I’d wait
For right as the taste hits my tongue’s sorry buds
The flavor transmorphs from magic to mud
The fantasy sweet, reality vile
I would have preferred a mouthful of bile
I clench the cursed fruit, and I could’ve sworn
There once was smooth skin in place of these thorns
But now my hand bleeds with gashes that sting
And into my flesh some sharp thistles cling
My screams could be heard from a mile away
This pain is the price I had known I would pay
The echoes split ears like the sound of a gun
And return to remind I’ve dishonored the Son
I look to the weed that has sourced all this pain
The one from whose bough I should’ve refrained
But now it seems twisted, gnarled and dead
The once golden branches resembling lead
It’s already rotten, the stench is unbearable
A smell done injustice by a word like terrible
For no phrase can capture this horror’s power
The tragic aroma of pleasure gone sour
I look for some water, hoping to drown
For never there was as foolish a clown
Better with fluid to fill wicked lungs
Than explain to the King why I went back to dung
I stumble around till I fall by a river
Recognition compels my whole body to shiver
I’ve been here once, I’ve seen this before
I once knelt down on this very shore
The scent hits me first, and isn’t it funny
It’s sweet like good nectar, or the world’s finest honey
My nostrils are hungry, I can’t get enough
It beats the last smell, this can’t be a bluff
By mistiest eyes I manage a peek
You’ve yet seen nothing till you’ve seen this creek
The water is clean, it’s clear and it’s pure
No river on Earth can match its allure
Bliss is the tenor of this bubbling brook
Like the word “pardoned” to the ear of a crook
For freedom itself is the cry of this spring
And captives are caused with glad hearts to sing
I dip in a finger and jump at the thrill
A desert oasis, yet perfectly chilled
The wilderness fades, the air is less humid
I feel I belong even though I’ve been stupid
Resistance is futile, I fall like a log
I plunge in my head and I drink like a dog
This taste is far better than that of the first
And quenches at last the insatiable thirst
I sense a true love that’s stirring this hour
Sinister sin has lost all its power
I lay on the shore and lay down my might
To the Lord of the river I give up the fight
