‘Twas after noon the fateful day

I woke with anxious chill

A dream had struck me deep with fear

My soul with dread to fill

I staggered over to my books

Not knowing what I lacked

I grabbed the dusty tome that read

“Zondervan” on the back

The inside mattered more today

And mattered more than ever

I needed words to soothe my woes

And clear the stormy weather

I thumbed the middle, opened up

Expecting a cool breeze

I found instead a mighty gale

That brought me to my knees

The Rock of Ages spoke to me

With power in His voice

Love and Justice Consummate

He offered me a choice

“Your sins are scarlet, crimson red

You’ve made yourself My foe

Draw near to Me, come close to Me

I’ll make you white as snow

If you resist, if you rebel

In wrath I will devour

The time of mercy come to end

Before My sword you’ll cower”

What trouble did this cause my mind

What anguish did accost!

I sought the Bible for cheap peace

Instead I learned I’m lost!

I went to church with haste that week

And went the next one too

I had to hear God’s voice again

I had to be made new

I don’t know when the shift took place

The week I cannot say

About the time I turned a man

God set me on the Way

He gave me grace to see His Son

Behold Him in His glory

He gave me eyes to see His Light

And ears to hear His Story

I heard the Son of God above

Cry out upon the tree

I saw that Man yield up his soul

And pay the price for me

Isaiah’s words were brought to bear

At once it all had set

The Lord could make me white as snow

My crimes he would forget

The trade was made at Calvary

The cleansing came through strife

To have my scarlet sins erased

He offered up his life

Today I still act stupidly

To holiness I’m late

Yet this I know, I’m not the same

Now evil’s what I hate

Someday I will be clothed in white

And see my precious King

I’ll fall down at his throne in praise

With saints and angels sing

We’ll sing the fatal color black

Back when we’d called Him foe

Of how he took all of our red

And made us white as snow
